Blueberry Basil Smoothie
Today, I'm continuing on the smoothie train from my last post, with a new smoothie recipe and some more tips & tricks. I've been absolutely loving all of the delicious fresh food that has been abundant so far this summer, and I can definitely feel myself becoming more creative in the kitchen with all of these options so readily available!
One thing that I love to use whenever I can is fresh herbs. The flavour difference when you compare them to their dried versions just can't be beat!! Plus, adding fresh herbs into your meals is also a great way to get more GREENS in, and we all know that greens are one of the most important things to fit into our day, right?! Now, that brings me to today's smoothie tip... ADD GREENS!!
I know, I know, you all probably already know the trick of adding fresh spinach into your smoothie to amp up the nutritional value. But have you ever thought about using something else? Fresh herbs, perhaps? In today's recipe, I have added a large handful of fresh, local basil with some frozen blueberries to make a new summertime favourite that is light & fresh in taste and so satisfying. I also added some extra greens, but they aren't necessary if you don't have them kicking around... but if you do, throw them in! The great thing about kale or spinach is that they don't add any flavour so they can go in anything. And on the other hand, the great thing about basil is that it DOES add flavour! The point here is that your smoothie greens don't always have to be the same... take advantage of the abundant herbs during this time of the year and start playing with different flavours. Cilantro pineapple? "Mojito" mint? Strawberry basil? Cacao mint? So many options, so little time!!
